Seoul, Korea, July 15, 2025 – To keep ongoing cable-laying operations for an HVDC submarine cable electrification project on track, deugro Korea, in collaboration with deugro Japan and deugro UAE, timely delivered 700 kilometers of MRC, DC400kV and FO cables, totaling 15,500 metric tons, from Japan and Norway to a cable-laying vessel in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
For timely deliveries in accordance with the strict project schedule, deugro’s teams provided an all-in-one service solution for the client Samsung C&T (SCT). The solution encompassed the identification and chartering of suitable heavy lift vessels, which were able to safely and efficiently accommodate such large static tanks and cable amounts, as well as the ocean transportation, vessel inspections, timely coordination among all contract parties, scheduling and technical support. This was rounded off by the dismantling of the static tanks after successful delivery.
“To start the installation process and minimize the overall cost of the project, the cables needed to be delivered quickly and on time. Scheduling, precise preparation and smooth project execution were therefore paramount,” said Jong-Yub Han, Sales and Business Development Manager Operations at deugro Korea.
The 140 kilometers of MRC cable were loaded in a 20-day operation directly from a barge to the heavy lift vessel UHL Falcon at the Port of Osaka, Japan. To start the installation of the tanks, the spooling operations, and arrange for a timely departure from the Port of Osaka, the local deugro teams ensured that all requirements from the Maritime Warranty Surveyor (MWS), tasked by the consignee, were met in a timely manner.
“The biggest challenge arose from a short-notice requirement by the consignee’s MWS to record acceleration data during the sea voyage to the UAE. Since no measuring system was installed on the UHL Falcon, we quickly rented a motion monitoring system and had it hand-carried to Osaka for immediate installation on the vessel. For the next two shipments, we chartered suitable UHL F-900 vessels, which were already equipped with their own motion monitoring systems,” said Jong-Yub Han, Sales and Business Development Manager Operations at deugro Korea.
At the Port of Hitachi, Japan, the 280 kilometers of DC400kV cable were spooled directly from the pier—140 kilometers onto each of the UHL Force and the UHL Fierce. The remaining 280 kilometers of FO cable were collected by the heavy lift vessel BBC Austria from the Port of Rognan, Norway. For this purpose, two empty FO cable baskets were loaded at the Port of Finneid, Norway, and transported to the Port of Rognan, where the cables were subsequently spooled into the cable containers for their final ocean voyage to the UAE.
Upon arrival at Abu Dhabi Port, UAE, the 140 kilometers of MRC cable and the 280 kilometers of DC400kV cable were transloaded via spooling from their respective transport vessels onto the installation vessel MV Isaac Newton, anchoring alongside, via the pier. The 280 kilometers of FO cable were discharged by vessel crane, stored at the pier and later loaded onto the installation vessel using a mobile crane. After all the cables were successfully delivered, under coordination of deugro, the static tanks were disposed of at Abu Dhabi Port, UAE.
“Thanks to the close collaboration with the client, the carriers and all partners, as well as the proactive communication and daily status reports, all cables were delivered safely and timely to the installation vessel—ensuring the cable-laying operations remained on track,” said Jong-Yub Han, Sales and Business Development Manager Operations at deugro Korea.
