BorWin 5 – Connecting Offshore Energy
deugro Germany has been awarded the transport execution of high-voltage electrical equipment for the offshore connection of BorWin 5.
The cargo includes converter transformers with a total gross weight of 443 metric tons each as well as converter reactors with a length of 2.95 meters, width of 2.80 meters and height of 4.07 meters.
The BorWin 5 offshore grid connection system is a 900-megawatt high-voltage direct-current transmission system between the offshore wind farm He Dreiht in the German North Sea and an onshore grid connection point. The stand-alone platform includes modular living quarters and a helideck. It has a total weight of approximately 12,000 metric tons, while the jacket weighs approximately 7,500 metric tons.
The BorWin5 Project aims to establish a direct current connection in the North Sea Cluster 7 wind farm. The three-phase current generated by the wind farm is to be converted from 66 kilovolts to a direct current of ±320 kilovolts on the offshore converter platform BorWin epsilon, and then transported via an approximately 120-kilometer-long submarine cable via Norderney to Hilgenriedersiel on the mainland. From there, the electricity is to be transported via an approximately 110-kilometer-long underground cable to the grid connection point Garrel/Ost, north of Cloppenburg, Germany.
The planned transmission capacity of 900 megawatts will be able to supply around 1.1 million households with climate-neutral electricity.
The transport of the heavy lifts for the offshore station is scheduled to begin at the start of the third quarter of 2023 and is expected to be finalized during the second quarter of 2024.
deugro Spain has already been involved in the BorWin 5 Project—having been awarded by Dragados Offshore in the spring of 2022 with the transport of 38 steel blocks on a modular carrier vessel chartered, under FIOS terms, from Altinova, Turkey to the Dragados shipyard in Spain in a total of nine consecutive transports.
